Description
The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. formally known as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción but more commonly known as Santa Maria Church, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993 as part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. It is one of only four Baroque Spanish-era churches in the country. Having been built in the 17th century by Augustinians, the church was built on top of a hill. The church also once served as a citadel and a fortress during the 1896 revolution.
